RELATIVE CLAUSE
1 Definition of the term and form of the relative clause
The term 'relative clause' is used here in the conventional way, viz. as a construction in
which a noun phrase is modified by a clause. Relative clauses are part of the de dicto do-
main (cf. Frajzyngier 1991) because they represent constructions in which one of the
elements is modified by a proposition.
Mupun has only postnominal relative clauses (RCs) which are introduced by a relative
marker. The order of the major constituents is thus : Head--Relative marker--Clause. The
Head plus the RC constitutes a nominal construction and as such it can have a definite
marker n3, a demonstrative marker sa, and a plural marker mö added. In the following di-
agram I did not illustrate the post-nominal modifiers:
