 International Congress of
Ethnobiology
October 21-25, 1990 Kunming, China

The First International Congress of Ethnobiology
was held in Brazil from July 19-24, 1988. As the
name implies, this is the second international gathering
of ethnobiologists but the first time in China.
Kunming is the provincial capital of Yunnan Province,
the People’s Republic of China. The city is
known as the „Spring City‘ because the climate in
Kunming is mild and spring-like. Yunnan Province
is known as the Kingdom of Plants and Animals
awing to its rich flora and fauna. Yunnan is home to
24 minority nationalities, a concentration of cultural
diversity greater than any other areas of the country.
You will have a chance not only to see Kunming but,
after the Congress, also to visit various parts of the
province. Post-congress excursions will be arranged
to visit Dali, Lijang and Xishuangbanna.
Detailed information on the Congress such as
payment of registration fees, hotel arrangements,
post-congress excursions etc. will be sent to you in a
circular, Please write to:

The Challenges of Ethnobiology in the 21st Century,
The discipline ofethnobiology has come of age inthe
latter half of the 20th century. A growing number of
scientists from a broad range of traditional disciplines

 boundaries of anthropology, archaeo-1ogy,
 botany, zoology, pharmacology, geography,
sociology, linguistics and related fields in the study
of the present an the past relationships of human
societies to their plant and animal environments. The

significance of the ethnobiological knowledge of
indigenous peoples as this relates to the maintenance
of biological diversity and conservation of natural
biological resources has become a major focus for
concerned scientists world-wide, as indicated clearly
in the 1988 Declaration of Belem. The basic and
applied research challenges that face ethnobiology as
it moves into the 21st century will be the theme of
the ISE’s Second International Congress,
