Simonsen). — The correlation of types to periods, which is difficult because of the scanty material, is made on the basis of G. Gjessing’s standard book “The Younger Stone Age of Northern Norway” (1942, in Norwegian, with an English summary). The finds are grouped according to the “domi nance” of the various implement groups. In some sites the knives are in the majority, in others the spear and the point, etc. Implements of quartzite and hornstone and other artifacts made of hard stone are restricted to some districts as well as to the Younger Passage Grave period. The ceramics are late. The technique in hard stones disappears early, and the discarded types are replaced in the middle period by slate types. In the late period, the type scale becomes poorer, and the technique degenerates. This indicates that the real Stone Age in Troms ended about the middle of the South-Scandinavian Bronze Age. The beginning of the North-Norwegian slate culture must have taken place about the middle of the Passage Grave period, i. e., later than in East Finnmark, which lies nearer the Finnish origin. Before this there must have been mesolithic cultures in Troms, but they are still unknown. (Acta Borealia [Tromso] B. Humaniora 4. 1956. 132 pp.) Wild Reindeer Trapping at Gollevarre. Lappish Trapping Structures for Wild Rein deer. I (E. Manker and 0. Vorren). — Everywhere on the mountain plateaus and in the forest tracts from Kola Peninsula, in the north, to Jämtland and Hardangervidda, in the south, we find relics of structures designed for the trapping of wild reindeer. Research on an extensive scale has been set on foot in Sweden by Nordiska Museet and in Norway by Tromso Museum. Gollevarre lies within the trapping area of the earlier huntsmen in the inner Varanger Fjord (Norway). Many cultural currents have met in that district. Nevertheless the cultural picture seems to have been relatively simple three or four centuries ago. To all the larger trapping systems there seems to have been attached a place of sacrifice. In the 1820’s a chronicler saw the sacrificial site at Gollevarre, and it is mentioned by chroniclers of the 18th century. It has not yet been possible to de termine with certainty the site of the altar, but a luxuriant patch of grassy ground where there is a large heap of reindeer horns probably marks the spot. Weihnachtsumzüge mit Tiermasken und Verkleidungen, feierlicher Bewirtung der Umzügler mit landesüblichen Totenspeisen, lassen wurzelhaft einen ausgeprägten Totenkult wiedererkennen. Manche Züge und Gestalten wieder weisen hin auf ein altes Weiberfest und bringen zugleich weitgehend eine Imitation des Hoch zeitszeremoniells zum Ausdruck. Man kann wohl an die sogenannte Totenhochzeit den ken, die mit der Zeit sowohl in Rußland als auch im Ost-Baltikum entartet ist und wieder vergessen wurde, jetzt aber durch die vergleichende Analyse sich rekonstruieren läßt. Die livländischen Liven scheinen besonders am Ende der Wikingerzeit eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt zu haben als Vermittler der ostslawisch-byzantinischen Kulturelemente an die Letten und estnischen Insulaner. Gunda). — Primitive milling stones are used by shepherds in various areas of the Carpathians still nowadays and are to be found in other territories of Europe as well. The farther we delve into the past, the better the use of these instruments is revealed. They are not only to be found among the relics of agricultural life, but also among those of food gathering habits.
