Throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa it has long been noted that the spread of cattle cultures has involved many other cultural traits in its train. In the present paper we are referring to courtship customs 1 . Peoples having a cattle culture almost always also have the “bride price” ; i. e. when a man marries he must pay a certain number of cattle, or their equivalent, for his bride. In order to make this payment a man usually has to remain single long after his puberty. This enforced period of celibacy is an active time of courtship. Among the cattle-raisers of Europe and Africa this courtship often consists of pre-marital intimacy, frequently of an innocent nature, and the singing of antiphonal love songs. It is the purpose of this study to trace the spread of the courtship complex in connection with the spread of cattle cultures. The complex still exists in its most highly developed form in the Swiss Alps, so this region will first be described. The complex was carried by cattle people to the Orient, where it was in part borrowed by agricultural civilizations in connection 1 The author is especially indebted to the books : R. H.
