Mythological Fragments from the Small Islands near Madang (New Guinea). 779 Mythological Fragments from the Small Islands near Madang (New Guinea). By Albert Aufinger, S. V. D., New Guinea. Since these islands are so small that they provide living space for only a few hundred natives, they have not received the attention they deserve. Although their inhabitants have been in very close contact with whites for several decades, the islands have remained practically unknown in ethnographic literature h In a previous article I discussed the “cipher languages” found on these islands 1 2 . Inasmuch as their ethnography is still so little known, and also because the ancient traditions are rapidly disap pearing due to the considerable cultural changes, I believe it worth the while to submit these few disconnected bits of mythology gathered in 1939 while I was still a missionary on the islands. They do not pretend to be more than the title indicates: fragments from an almost vanished melanesian island culture. 1. The Dispersal of the Fishes 3 . (A Myth from the Island of Ragetta.) A long time ago, there was on the island of Ragetta a deep and narrow water-hole, entirely enclosed with rocks. A broad, flat stone lay across the top like a cover. A great number of fishes, large and small, swam about in this reservoir, the large ones generally near the bottom and the smaller ones close to the surface. The water-hole was called Loliwan. But only one man knew there were so many fish there.
