The Social-Political Organisation of the E-yap Tribe, Central Cameroon. 233; The Social-Political Organisation of the E-yap Tribe, Central Cameroon. By L. W. G. Malcolm, M. Sc. The tribal organisation of the E-yap tribe in the grassland area of the Central Cameroon may be considered to consist of (a) Head-chief, (b) sub chiefs, headmen and counsellors, (c) freemen, and messengers, native constable, native accoucheur, and messengers, and (d) slaves. As far as could be ascer tained the social-political organisation of the tribe does not differ materially from that of the neighbouring Bali. (a) The head-chief (foñ E-yâp) is the absolute ruler of his people; and with his office he combines that of priest as well. Although in principle he is an autocrat, yet it is not usual for him to give any important orders or decisions without first consulting his counsellors. His decisions are very largely guided by the opinion of these men. His quarters are in the centre of the town, not far from the market place, the tribal ceremonial meeting ground, and close to the junction of the Chang-Bamenda-Fumban-Kumbo highroads 1 . His attendants and messengers have their quarters in the neighbourhood of his compound and are always within call. The position of the head-chief is hereditary, passing from father to son, or else to the nearest male relative. In all cases, as far as could be learned, descent is patrilineal. The late head-chief (Pujón) claimed to be ¡the twenty-first descendant to hold the office; and there is oral tradition of twenty head-chiefs who have rule over the tribe. He was nominated by his father (Foñ küa) to be his successor. At the time of his father’s death Puf on was in the employ of a European official on the coast. He was very intelligent, and spoke, in addition to Muñyáka, the tribal language, English, German, ITausa and Fulfulde. A great deal of my in formation was supplied by him, or else he verified the interpreter’s accounts. After the late war he came under the influence of itinerant Bausa traders, but they had to be removed, as the older members of the tribes objected to any Mohammedan influence in the tribal area. In consequence Bagam represents practically the border-line between Islamism and the indigenous native religions in this part of the area 2 . (b) Sub-chiefs, headmen and counsellors. — A sub-chief (foñ tía) cannot be appointed to his office unless he is a freeman, i. e. a non slave, or the son of a freeman, and secondly he must be a headman in charge of a compound. He also holds the status of attendant on the head-chief. The appointment is made by the head-chief after consultation with the other sub- chiefs, headmen and counsellors. Apart from any instructions that may be received from the head-chief, a sub-chief is at liberty to rule his area as he chooses.
