An analysis of the genealogical tables collected. 801 An analysis of the genealogical tables collected by Dr. Richard Thurnwald in Buin. W. J. Perry, East Yorks (England). It is gratifying to see that workers in the field are at last beginning to realize the value of genealogical tables as instruments of research. Their importance has already been demonstrated by Dr. Rivers, and it is greatly to be hoped that in the near future they will be collected by everyone who is studying the customs of primitive peoples. A complete set of the pedigrees of a community is a storehouse concerning, not only vital statistics, but also the social relations of its members. Dr. Thurnwald has recorded in his work on the Solomon Islands and the Bismarck Archipelago 1 , thirty-seven genea logical tables from the Buin district of Bougainville and from Lambutjo (Admiralty Islands). They are accompanied by a series of valuable notes which give much information as to the causes of death, the meaning of personal names, and so on, and some pages of vol. Ill are devoted to their discussion. The tables are divided into two groups: twenty-eight are from Buin, and the remaining nine are from Lambutjo. The latter can be neglected as they form only a minute fragment of the whole that is necessary if any satisfactory results are to be established. I shall therefore pass on at once to the disscusion of the tables from Buin. I. Trustworthiness. Before stating the facts revealed by the analysis it will be necessary to examine their trustworthiness as collections of social data. 1. References. — The first thing which becomes apparent to one who analyses the tables is the fact that the cross-references from one table to another are so scanty. It is evident that a married woman should appear at least twice; in the pedigree of her family and also in that of her husband, and the same should for the latter. It is necessary that cross-references should be given in both cases to enable the investigator to trace out their relation ship, if there should be any. Dr. Thurnwald’s cross-references are, however, of the scantiest: for example in the case of the marriage of BANA and Marakana 2 in 2. a there is no cross-reference, in spite of the fact that the marriage is recorded again in 4. a. Again, no reference is made in 2. a to the fact that BUTUKAI has a wife, Kauraci; for that information one has to turn to 2. <?, but marriage occurs again in 5. b. There is no cross-reference in 2. c to 5. b but there is one in 5. b to 2. c.
