Two Stones in Guatemala. 13 reras big stone. It was a broad oblong stone with sculptures in relief, and lay flat on the ground as it had lain since people remembered; and the people of the place told me of the pains Dr. Lehmann — who was the only previous traveller to have seen the stone — of the pains he had taken to copy the sculptures. In looking at the stone, how ever, it occurred to me to think, that besides those sculptures on top, there might be sculptures on the under side. But the stone weighed ten tons, and I had no men. When I again saw Mr. Herrera I told him my suspicions, and asked him whether he wouldnt be so kind as to order the stone lifted; and offered to go down my self and superintend the lifting. Very good, he said. But he remarked that it was raining. That place, he said, will be a mud hole; lets wait till the dry season. The diy season came, and Mr. Herrera was dead. And it was not till last year, when I had the company of a passing antiquary, who I thought would be intrested, that I took an opportunity to see Mr. Herreras sons — particularly Mr. Manuel Herrera, then minister of agriculture — and with their leave, and the use of their factors and work men, finally got the stone lifted. I must tell you that a most obliging person at the lifting was our common acquaintance Mr. Julio García Salas, the manager of Baúl. The Castle gang of fifteen or sixteen men, under their overseers — with all their levers, and chains, and pulleys, and oxen — had not by themselves been able to get the stone up, and Id gone to the neighbouring Baúl, which is a sugar place, to borrow jacks from the Scotch engineer. As I spoke to the engineer, Mr. García Salas rode up; and himself becoming curious about the big stone, which he’d not previously heard of, came out to the Castle place to see it, and not only saw it, but much to my convenience immediatly took complete charge of the job; superseding the overseers, telling each man where to put hand or foot, calling each man by name, as he was able to do, and pronouncing his opinion of the mothers and granmothers of any that seemed to him to be slack. — The stone was lifted; and was actually found to have quite a nice carving on the under side. Mr. García Salas was enthusiastic about it, and equally so, the pi ofessional antiquary Ive mentioned, who was present and photographed it, and has since, I believe, represented it as his own discovery. The stone, as the result of lifting, was not turned up-side down on the ground, but was left and still remains standing on edge; as you see in these .two photographs (6 and 7). One side, which is the old side, the side seen by Hr. Lehmann, slightly leans against a couple of solid posts (6); while the unobstructed side (7) is the side newly brought to light. You see at once that the stone on edge, as it is, though practically convenient, is not according to the carvings. The carvings, on both sides, contain human figures, which to be set upright would require the stone to stand on end. On both sides alike, for the carvings, the end where in one picture you see the ax is the proper foot, and the end where in the other my man is, the proper top. The carvings apart, the stone though some what regular in shape, is apparently a natural slab of the usual volcanic stone; of which the extreme height, or length, is between eleven and twelve feet; the extreme width, between seven and eight feet; and the thickness, about twenty inches.
