D., [37-40, 1942-45] of their grammar and word roots having the general Melanesian character, and though culturally there is almost no difference between them they nevertheless have to be linguistically distinguished as the Megiar and Matukar tribes. 1. Megiar Tribe. This tribe comprises the inhabitants of the Sarang islet which stretches in front of the Dilup plantation on the mainland, as well as the scantily populated Megiar islet, 3 miles towards the South, stretching with some narrow coral outcrops in front of 4 well laid-out hamlets on the mainland. These narrow barrier-like coral reefs create the basin of Megiar, leaving only a very narrow entrance into it. The opposite end of the Megiar basin is inhabited by a mixed popu lation, the Megiar and Saker languages being spoken in the same village by the same people. A Megiar hamlet insulated by y 2 hour's distance is Biras, vainly trying to stop the infiltration to the coast of the encroaching Likesal-Saker, who could not continue their coastward thrust in time-honou red fashion after the arrival of the controlling Government but who never theless steadily attempted their aims by nasty tricks. The Likesal men are intruders on the Megiar-Biras and have not yet succeeded in mingling with these tribal neighbours as have the Sakers of the Biranis group. The real reason for the hostilities between these inter tribal groups are not boundaries but the struggle for a rightful and not only privileged access to the sea and the right to fish and to paddle their own canoes which up till recently has been a privilege of the coastal Papuo- Melanesians only. However the Likesal, Udisis, and Bunu Sakers seem to emerge victorious out of the struggle and have now obtained the grudging sanction to adze and paddle their own canoes and are able to return the visits of the Karkar islanders. Linguistically identical with the Megiar though far beyond the ambit of the Mugil district are the Karkar islanders of the Taikia section and the Seg people living on the Seg island and on the mainland in the hamlet of Budup. Other closely allied dialects of the Megiar are spoken by the people of the islets Ruo (or: Rivo) and Grangged (or: Ragetta) and of the mainland hamlets of Malmal, Yabob and Bilbil (or : Bilibili). The Ragetta dialect and the other insular, to Megiar and Matukar allied, dialects show apart from slight phonetical changes some divergencies in the use of the emphatic pronoun which is not used by the Megiar and Matukar people, who omit even the cardinal pronoun, using only the radical pronoun prefix. The insular dialects preserved more of the Melanesian characteristics than the mainland Papuo-Melanesians. Note : A grammar and vocabulary of the Ragetta dialect have been published by a German Lutheran Missionary but I was not able to obtain it. 2. Matukar Tribe. A semasiological study of the Megiar and Matukar dialects shows that quite a great deal of their etymon is Austronesian although not always synonymous with either the latter or between each other.
