the sea in the Solor Strait . These are flat boxes of woven bamboo . Some are quite small , less than a yard in length , for small fish . For bigger fish , they can be quite large , thus there are large nama , nama bélá , and small ñama , ñama kéni . All are built according to the same plan , a cylindrical tube , running into the interior , with an opening at the end which admits the fish to the main part of the trap , but prevents their exit . The trap itself is the casing surrounding the tube . Once inside the fish swims around and around without being able to spot the way out because of the way its eyes are positioned in its head . Large traps are dropped out at sea in 100 meters of water . They are not marked with floats , because of the danger of the many people passing by in the Solor Strait , some of whom might cut the lines and take the gear . Instead the fishermen drop out lengthwise in front of the trap the rope by which it is let down and pulled up . The owner sights on a hill behind the village or on a hill on Adonara . In this way , only he knows where the trap is and which way it is facing .
They weigh the nama down with four stones , two tied to either side , and leave it for about a week . They then take it up and empty it . There is no way to tell before hand whether it is full or empty or to estimate how many fish may be in it until they have brought it up and looked . Since the trap cannot be seen and there is no sign , everything depends on the owner’s memory . To bring it up they use a special device consisting of a flat round stone like a curling stone . Around it they weave a rattan frame with a long rattan hook . They drag this object on the ground by means of a rope until it crosses and hooks the rope in front of the trap . Once they have secured this second rope , they have control of the trap . This device is called wato lita in Lamakera and fato lité in Lamalera . The rope for it is beka . The rock lobster ( , Palinurus ) , called kokar , is hunted with a spear gun .
Trading
Many members of the village depend on trading for a livelihood . Our host was also a merchant who bought many goods from west Lembata , cluding shark fins , deer antlers , and birdnests . He transported these goods to Makassar to sell there . Many Chinese buy birdnests , as they do shark fins , but non - Chinese also buy the nests to sell in their shops . In 1979 the deer antlers could be bought locally for ca . Rp 2 , 500 / kilo ( ca . U . S . $5 . 94 ) . They
might be sold in Macassar for Rp4 , 500 - 5 , 000 / kg . ( U . S . $10 . 69 - 11 . 88 ) . From Macassar , they go on to Singapore for transshipment to China , after ing ground up for use as an aphrodisiac . Our host did not know their use .
Our host handled various kinds of shells for potential commercial use . These included the en lipped oyster , called here mutiara kama ( pearl skin ) and the black lipped oyster , called lepit . The latter sold for Rp 250 / kg . ( U . S . $0 . 59 ) , but he did not know the price of the former . A large shell , called batu lagar in Indonesian , which goes to Australia for paint , is called kaloka and sold for Rp 5000 / kg . ( U . S . $11 . 88 ) .
He also had two hectares at Bau Pukan on the west coast of Lembata , good land which he planted with coconuts . He put in 250 nuts 1978 , of which 100 grew . He intended to continue planting in order to fill the area and expected the trees to give a crop when they were seven years old . In the meantime he planted the fields with maize , cassava , vegetables , etc . , so that he got a crop every year . During the rainy season he stayed there and guarded the fields from wild pig , although the field was fenced , but the work was done by hired coolies .
Descent and Marriage Ties
Clans in Lamakera are patrilineal and exoga - mous . 10 * When I asked our host what his clan was , he replied that his clan was Perak Lolo and that his village ( kampong ) was Lewoklodo . I take it that what he meant by “village” was a localized descent group forming a specific ward in Lamakera , and that Perak Lolo was a segment of this descent group . Weber described the villages as being divided into a number of kampongs ( hamlets ) , each with its own chief ( Weber 1902 : 34 ) . The census
10 I make no effort to reconcile the diverse spellings of the
descent group names in this paper . Leyn ( 1981 ) is not sistent in the spellings he uses , and the kinds of variations exhibited here are characteristic of the literature on the Lamaholot and of local usage . This situation is explained by the fact that there is no standard orthography for the Lamaholot language . There are also variations in ciation determined in part by grammatical functions and in part by dialectical variations . Although there have been several modem linguistic studies of Lamaholot carried out by native speakers of the language , the orthography each author adopts differs from that of the other authors , again partly because of individual choice and partly because of dialect differences in the mother tongue of the different writers .
