Anthropos 94.1999
have changed, but the memories of earlier periods
and hardships bound up with one’s social standing
remain in place and never cease to resurface as
an object of protest in discussions on death and
mortuary customs - discussions which never fail
to draw attention to the miserable condition of
today’s poor and propertyless for whose welfare,
it is claimed, the government is doing nothing.
In discussions on death with Odemira inhabitants,
the conversation sooner or later returns, without
exception, to the terrible earlier periods - and this,
linked to references to the spectre of poverty in
more recent times, for which in their view the
government bears the main responsibility.
Cemeteries
During an interview in one of the remote villages
at the edge of the region, Sao Martinho, I make my
way across the village on foot with my informant,
Maria Augusta (27.19.93). She wanted to show
me all the important places for her personal biog
raphy. When we arrive at the church, we view the
construction work for a small holy niche, which
a local nun has donated. As we circumambulate
the church, Maria Augusta explains that her aunt
was buried on the precise spot on which we are
standing, in 1890. She was only 18 years old at
the time, wanted to marry and died tragically of
tuberculosis shortly before the wedding. However,
in the same year, the new cemetery was opened on
a hill above the village and the aunt ought rightly
to have been buried there. This, however, did not
occur. The story becomes comprehensible in the
light of the following developments.
In 1835, the liberal government had passed
a law according to which burials in the church,
directly along the church wall and in the church
graveyard (adro) were no longer permitted for rea
sons of hygiene (Pina Cabral and Feijo 1983: 25).
This innovation led to protests and revolts across
the length and breadth of the land, of which the
most famous was the revolt of “Maria da Fonte”
(in the 1840s; Riegelhaupt 1981). The liberal
government sought to argue its case by citing
Enlightenment ideas which brought medical and
hygienic factors to bear. The protesters justified
their opposition by asserting that they did not
wish to separate themselves from “their deads” (os
nossos mortos), who, if they continued to be buried
in/or along the church, would be enclosed within
the memory and susceptible to the intercession of
all parishioners (Pina Cabral and Feijo 1983: 30).
The implementation of the new cemetery laws
proceeded during the remaining decades of the last
century. Even today one still senses opposition to
the establishment of cemeteries (1983: 40). Feijo
and Pina Cabral make explicit reference only to
the north of Portugal in their article.
I am assuming that such opposition also sur
faced in the south, here in the district of Odemira,
as the rest of the story recounted by my informer,
Maria Augusta, leads one to suppose:
My great-grandfather was so disgusted that his beloved
little daughter should have to lie out there alone in the
new cemetery that he broke into tears. He went to the
priest and begged him to have mercy on his daughter.
After much toing and froing - the priest was forbidden to
carry out burials in the churchyard on pain of sanctions -
the priest nevertheless decided to soften his line and as
a result my aunt was the last person to be buried right
in the middle of the village beneath this small street.
And as a result the priest really was punished, although
it was my great-grandfather who paid the fine. A short
time later, an old beggar died and he was then the first
person to be buried out there in the new cemetery, and
of course this didn’t cause any difficulties because he
was alone and no longer had any relatives and as such
he “christened” the new cemetery as it were. Even after
this, people continued not to want be buried so far away
from the village for fear of lack of protection against
evil powers and because they preferred to be buried
near to their relatives. Much protest and many voices
of discontent continued to be heard, but the new laws
were unstoppable.
Cemeteries in Former Times
In the village of Garvao in the neighbouring
district of Ourique but lying in the immediate
vicinity of Sao Martinho, there is an abandoned
old cemetery dating back to the last century,
which was installed only about 50 metres away
from a Manueline chapel. The walls of the old
cemetery are in ruins, the wrought iron gate hangs
obliquely from the frame. The inner court of the
old cemetery is overgrown with high grasses and
weeds. There are no longer any gravestones to be
seen, apart from a dented, cast-iron stand which
was previously used as a grave frame. Such frames
were only installed in those graves where a perma
nent right to a resting place had been obtained. An
older gentleman who lives nearby recounted that
as youngsters they had used the cemetery for dares
and escapades and for playing, just as youngsters
continued to do today.
The remains of the dead from the old cemetery
were not removed to the new cemetery which was
inaugurated at the beginning of this century. In
