Dreaming and Managing the Future 27 3. Managing dreams San Martineros can exercise some control over the contents and hence the prophecies of their dreams, although the control is never absolute. They can manage, even if never completely dominate, their dreams, and so can in a limited way manage the future. As will be seen, self-management is an important element in dream management. There are several things one can do to avoid “bad” dreams. Thus, in order to avoid nightmares and “bad” dreams one ought not eat too much at supper, and one ought wait several hours after supper before retiring. In addition, it is important to “entrust” one’s soul to God immediately before retiring. Women often say this should be done by praying before the family altar (usually a series of lithographs of Christ and other holy figures set above a table inside the house), but many men say all one needs to do is to get into the hammock or bed and simply say, “God, I entrust my soul to you,” to minimize the chances of an unwanted dream. It is also important to “avoid evil thoughts” before retiring. San Martineros believe that both God and the Devil are nearby when one sleeps, and both can communicate with the soul in dreams, or, as it is alternately expressed, “cause” dreams. If one has “decent” thoughts at night, then God will communicate with one; if one has “evil” thoughts, then the Devil will. In this context, “evil thoughts” refer to negative or hostile thoughts about other people, e. g., envy, desire for revenge, anger, and the like. A common example, given by men, is that of a wife who is angry at her husband. “You should entrust your soul to God before sleeping, and then nothing will happen. But, say a wife does not love her husband and she is thinking about this, then the Devil will enter her dream and put some idea of killing him in her mind, by poisoning the food, drowning him, or in some other way.” Conversely, if one’s thoughts are “good,” then the Devil cannot “influence a dream because God is there first.” One’s thoughts are critical throughout. Thus, two men were discussing with me the dangerous and aggressive pit vipers found in the forest and, at times, in the milpas. I said that after hearing all this I might dream about them. With some alarm, both men assured me that there were no vipers in town, that adults rarely died of their bite, and that I should not “think of it at all.” “They are not found in town, but do not think of it much, do not dream of it, for your own fear can harm you.” In short, a person’s preoccupations and actions especially in the hours between supper and bedtime have some effect on dreams and, conse quently, on the future.
