214 Life and Death in Mayan Hieroglyphic Inscriptions cheating some disastrous event that befell the mentioned family and its current ruler, Cracked Eggshell, according to Dos Pilas HS1, P’3-T’3, the father Shield-God K’s and his predecessor on the throne of Dos Pilas. As Thompson (1974:87) wrote: „From Mexican sources it is known that Venus was much feared at heliacal rising after inferior conjunction; its rays then slew various categories of persons or per sonified manifestations of nature. Illustrations in the [Venus table of the Codex Dresden] show Venus gods hurling spears earthward, and, below the slain victims. The accompanying glyphs, with very few exceptions are direful: ’Woe to the maize, woe to the corn-fields, drought, misery, affliction of war*, and so on.” The malevolent, militaristic nature of the Morning Star god reveals itself in his role as shooter and slayer. In the Tonalamatl Aubin (plate 9) Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli, the morning star god of the Aztecs who faces the fire god Xiuhtecuhtli, wears the symbol of „war”, atl tlachinolli (water and fire), in his headdress. In Codex Borbonicus 9 the elements atl tlachinolli are arranged between the two gods (Seler GA I: 628/629). The final passage of Dos Pilas Hieroglyphic Stairway 2 (east) refers to the „capture” of Tah-Moo („torch-bearing macaw”), mentioned above in Cracked Eggshell’s name clause (Fig. 16b): U1 (9.11.11.9.17) 9[Caban] 5 Pop VI 877.515:130.181, „seized is (515:130 = chuc-aan) and enclosed (181-130 = kal-aan)” U2,V2 122:150?.744b:?, Tah-Moo / ?:?. 11:570?:? W1 501.181:178, nab(e).kal-eP., „the first principal” 24 XI 561?:23? — 1030d, caanal — tz’acab?, „of the Sky matrilineage”? W2 36.168a:569:140.130, „beloved sprout (36) of the lords (168a-130) of Tikal (569:140)” X2 501.25:501, nab(e).cay.naabl, „the first one up to the border of the ocean”, or ba.ca.ba (= ba.cab), „the one on top of the earth”. A title comparable to Wl/Xl appears in the inscription on the right side of Naranjo Stela 24. This text comments on the maternal and paternal affiliations of a Tikal princess who went to Naranjo to establish there a new line of rulers. Her father is addressed by the glyphs: E10 1.535:24?, u.mun/coh-iP., ,,his tender/beloved one” Dll 501.181:178, nab(e).kal-el?, „the first principal” Ell 561:23 — 1030d, caanal — tz’acab?, „of the Sky matrilineage”? D12 12.683[520]:178, ah/hol.tze.kal-el, ,,he/the chief, the laughing principal”, (father of Tikal princess I) E12 190:25.738a, bat/ch’ac.cal.cay, „who died in war (by beheading)”? D13 36.168a:569, „beloved sprout (36) of the lords (168a) of Tikal (569)”. 9) Aguateca Stela 2 and Dos Pilas Stela 16. The text of Aguateca Stela 2 (Fig. 17) and of Dos Pilas Stela 16 starts with the date (9.15.4.6.4) 8 Kan 17 Muan, and a Venus glyph to which the Seibal emblem compound is attached. The latter could refer to a military action against Seibal 25 led by the current lord 24 ) Th e translation kal-el, „principal”, of 181:178 and 683b: 178 makes use of Cakchiquel and Quiche terms. Another possibility is to render 178.181 as el-ah, „promise, offering” (Cakchiquel/Kekchi), or as el.kal, „emerging from the enclosure”. ") Stone et al. (1980) describe a comparable military raid led by a lord of Caracol against Naranjo. The date of this event, (9.9.18.16.3) 7 Akbal 16 Muan, is followed on Caracol Stela 3 (F2-F3) and on Naranjo Hieroglyphic Stairway I, Step f7(Mlb-Nlb) by a „Venus glyph with attached Naranjo emblem compound”. As mentioned by Closs (1978:149), the date (9.9.18.16.3) precedes the date (9.15.4.6.4) of Aguateca Stela 2 by 65 Venus Rounds (VR) + 1 day; 65 VR (= 2 CR) are the length of the Venus table of the Dresden Codex. The remarkable association of „Venus-shell” compounds with dates falling in the month Muan is further strengthened by Tikal Stela 16. This stela portrays Tikal Ruler A, 181.630:130 - 561:23.1030b, nick-named Double-Comb. He wears a skull with attached Venus glyph in his headdress. The accompanying date is (9.14.0.0.0) 6 Ahau 13 Muan (A1-A3). At this time Ruler A was in the third Katun of his life (Stela 16, C3). He died in his fourth Katun (see section 11).
