fore explicable to his critics . While Putnam had phasized the unusual qualities of the pygmies , he had never underestimated their ties with local sedentary ricans . Indeed , Putnam’s own views of pygmies appear to emphasize the complex interrelationship between the pygmies and neighbouring cultivators , ties making mies vulnerable and dependent . In fact , Putnam’s own everyday life revolved far more around African villagers than pygmies . While Putnam encouraged pygmies to visit his camp in order to entertain tourists and lend a sense of the exotic to his milieu , his little kingdom depended more on the help of sedentary Africans . When Turnbull returned to the Congo after Putnam’s death , he at first tried to capitalize on his ties with Putnam as a kind of surrogate son . Unfortunately for Turnbull , this ploy backfired for he soon found the kin of Putnam’s concubines making demands upon him for economic help and loyalty . Turnbull backed away angrily from such commitments and as a result developed bitter ties with many African villagers . This explains the mitting hostility which colours all Turnbull’s writings about African villagers and their relations with pygmies . This distorted Turnbull’s work from the beginning , and probably accounts for Turnbull repeatedly arguing that villagers actually control pygmies less than they claim . Turnbull even claims pygmies dupe villagers into false consciousness about their relations . By the time he wrote “The Mbuti Pygmies : Change and Adaptation” ( 1983 ) ( see my review in Anthropos 80 . 1985 : 752 f . ) his ings on these issues had become appallingly biased and distorted .
Schebesta’s relations with Putnam were different . Schebesta wrote one letter to Putnam remarking on the value of his work ( reading between the lines this bly referred to Putnam’s work in publicizing the need for pygmy studies rather than giving any praise for his al findings ) , but the two never met . Schebesta sedulously avoided meeting Putnam , even when he was in that part of the Congo . Significantly , Schebesta dismissed many of Putnam’s claims to understanding pygmies by arguing that the pygmies at Epulu had been hopelessly corrupted by contact with such a wide range of modern influences that they were utterly unlike any pygmies he himself had encountered anywhere else in the Ituri . Schebesta’s findings were unlikely to have pleased Putnam because Schebesta , inspired perhaps by his mentor Fr . Schmidt who was determined to find data proving a sense of monotheism among primordial mankind , stressed my beliefs in a supreme being and in supernaturalism . In contrast , Putnam , a devoted atheist , had apparently taken comfort in finding no traces of supernatural belief among the supposedly practical - minded pygmies other than the most mechanistic forms of magic . Ironically , Turnbull’s own writings supported Schebesta’s views . This may reflect a common and accurate reading of the ethnographic facts , but it is also worth mentioning that unlike Putnam , Turnbull himself was deeply committed to a mystical view of the world and humans’ place in it , although in Turnbull’s case this eventually led him to convert to Buddhism .
Putnam’s views on the pygmies were far less tic and mystical than most subsequent researchers’ even though he himself had gone to live in the Ituri in order to reject many conventional aspects of Western tion . Putnam thought that the single most important trait differentiating pygmy groups was whether they were net hunters or bowsmen . He also emphasized that pygmy society had been constantly changing both in response to the altering influences by the African villagers with whom they were inextricably involved . He found ing disconcerting about these changes . This is surprising ( though not if one recognizes Putnam’s bent toward ways going against any received opinion ) if one accepts the fact that Putnam latched onto the pygmies in the first place because they epitomized a fabled and romantic image of wild and unknown Africa that had haunted civilized thinking ever since Pharaonic Egypt and rodotus . Putnam wanted to be admired and recognized as a world expert on an exotic topic which no one else was adventurous enough to study firsthand , even though he himself never bothered acutally to live among the pygmies . Still , what he did know and report about them emphasized their practical skills and knowledge about survival in a complex forest environment and not any exotic or mystifying beliefs or values .
Examination of Putnam’s own fame in America , and even the more scholarly works of Schebesta and Turn - bull , as well as subsequent writers , reveals a complex set of arguments rooted in Westerners’ hopes to discover primal humanity , to uncover purer , more authentic sides to human identity . Similar thinking also colours much of the worst writing about the Bushman of the Kalahari , as manifest in the works of DeVore and Lee . What we can learn from Mark’s book is that hunters and ers , particularly when they appear strikingly different physically from us Westerners , evoke an outpouring of irrational and yearning visions of what we want to believe about ourselves and our past .

Als der jetzt in Erfurt tätige Sozialisationsforscher Erich Renner 1987 damit begann , den Nachlaß wig Kohl - Larsens zu bearbeiten ( Inventar , Stadtarchiv Landau / Pfalz 1990 ) , stieß er in dessen ( 1991 edierten ) “Lebenserinnerungen” sowie Korrespondenzen auf weise , daß bereits 1946 eine druckfertige graphie” Vorgelegen habe . Damals hatte Kohl - Larsen wegen seiner frühen NSDAP - Mitgliedschaft noch kationsverbot , und seinem Hausverlag fehlten die Mittel . Der Röth - Verlag nahm sich später seiner Manuskripte an , veröffentlichte 1956 die Aufsehen erregende geschichte des Issansu - Märchenerzählers Simbo Janira , 1958 Kohl - Larsens Bericht über eine Wanderung zum Eismeer mit dem Erzähler des hier zu besprechenden
