Web-Besprechungen Rezension: http://www.germananthropology.com/ I imagine one of this website's main addressees: An anthropologist from a non-German-speak- ing country, looking for information on questions such as: Whar is the discipline of Social and Cultural Anthropology in Germany like? How did it become whar it is today? Who were and are its key figures? Which kind of geographical areas are German anthropologists predominanÄ±tly working in? Who stood for what, who collaborated with whom? Can we trace the development of certain âdisciplinary centersâ, representing theoretical or methodological âschoolsâ? The website http://www.germananthropology.com certainly offers informative and lively in- sights into the disciplineâs biography. Especially the longer âvideo interviewsâ (unfortunately only very limited in number and playing in a surprisingly weak sound quality) constitute its most remarkable element. These personal accounts, often more than 90 minutes long, provide fascinating insights into the biographical trajectories of individuals most of whom were born in the first half of the 20th century, who turned their vocational training towards a still quite un- popular and exotic field of academic study, who, especially after the war years, engaged them- selves in the establishment and structuring of new university departments, who at times became part of leftist social movements (especially the studentsâ movements in the 1970') and who re- flect about the disciplineâs most recent âturnsâ, trends and fashions. Most interviewees talk in a seemingly relaxed manner about what they perceive as their main biographical steps, their position within departments and academic networks and dont omit experiences of controversies and conflicts. While these arguments are certainly part of any âna- tionalâ discipline and offer important insights into lines of dominance in academic systems, some participants apparently used the historical review for reinventing their position and for settling old scores. As the site obviously is still at its beginning and additional video interviews will be recorded, a more consequent use of this combination between video- and web-presentation could be con- sidered for future phases. For instance, the main site does not necessarily have to be ordered. as an alphabetic list â comparable to any printed document â but instead could work with an as- semblage of tiles (e. g. scholarâs photograph), to be clicked on for providing access to the respec- tive biography or video. One could also arrange visual elements on some kind of virtual globe â hence, connecting biographies to key research areas and field sites. As âarea expertiseâ today con- stitutes only one key qualification among others, the website could also integrate fields of inter- estâ / âthematic expertiseâ as an additional structuring element. A more consistent use of the technical advantages of a web presentation could also include video-, audio- and photo-material provided by the scholars themselves. Especially elderly scho- lars often host rich and hitherto inaccessible private archives, which might offer invaluable in- sights into past (and gone) field sites, some of which have hardly any resemblance with our con- cemporary conditions of work and travel.
