[2 The Charming of Warts ET These all show cures involving the re- moval of the wart to some other place >r host, or having a corresponding sub- Stance, such as meat, rotting with the wart's "spirit" shifted to it. This kind seems to be the most primitive as its allows for the wart being inhabited y a "devil" and the removal of this devil to another substance which will then rot away causes the wart to die ZÂ°hrouah lack of its personal spirit. Sroup 3. Organic cures: VE SE kit These are the most orthodox type of Cures. They all involve some kind of Plant juice containing enzymes which may really help. Take a broad-bean pod and rub the furry inside on the wart. Flush the pod down the WC. This last endearing touch is apparently very im Portant! (W.Sussex, 2oth century. E). Dandelion juice smeared on the wart (E, F). Castor oil rubbed on morning and evening (D.C.Jarvis, Australia). Birch tea taken internally and applied extern- ally removes warts in two weeks time. Birch tea is good for the skin anyway aS it purifies the blood (E, F, 5). Let a Snail walk over your wart, it will Soon disappear (E). Apply early morning Saliva before you have cleaned your Ceeth (E, F). Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer tried halved beans dipped in blood (US). you warts. Take a piece of fat with its Skin. Rub it onto the wart and then nail it to a post in the sun. As the fat melts, so does the wart (E). Take a String and tie in it knots of the same amount as the warts. Bury the string. AS it rots so do the warts (F, S, E). Rub the warts with a grenn elder twig. 3ury the twig (F). Take as many pebbles as you have warts. Touch each wart with a pebble. Put them in a bag. Go at mid- night to a crossroads and throw the Dag away over your shoulder. The warts Should follow (E). This is the second "ure here which involves a visit to a -roSSroads. It would suggest that Hecate "The dark and midnight hag" is implied. lecate is the waning to dark side of the moon and most spells for removing Â°hings are done when the moon is on the vaÃ¤ne. Rub your warts with a live toad. (Suffolk, E). Similar to the Swedish example given earlier but in that one Stroked the toad. Here the toad is being applied to the warte. 3Sroup 4. Other cures: Strong seasalt solution applied twice daily. Proven cure (E). Burn the wart with a nail heated in the fire. The war Joes yellow and falls off. (If you can dear the pain!) (F). Tie a horsehair around the wart if it is of the papil- loma type on a stalk. This cuts off the Dlood supply and the wart withers and irops off. Proven cure (E, F, Austr.). 50 there we have thirty cures for warts [Et would have been a good idea to test chem all but Ssuddenly hardly anyone had warts: There must be something valid in these cures or they would not have >ersisted so long, and some are still Lin uSe today. Leea Virtanen in her 'Children's lore", gives wart curing as a good example of children's magic, POSSibly because many children of around cen years old do have warts. She also nentions saliva first thing in the morn- ing, dandelion juice and strangling with thread, cures known also in Eng- land as well as in Finland. Scandina- vian children seem to use the Same me- chods, maybe the cures Spread by the Norse invaders are still around. Even Pliny mentioned such cures 2000 years ago. It would seem that such weird and >ften laughable cures do work Sometimes I have never actually seen anybody hurl ing pebbles around in a little bag at the crossroads but someone must have done, and with success, or this out- landish cure would have been. forgotten. There is more to the connection between body and mind than most people imagine.
