Today people were using razor blades and other sharp things to cut the genitals of such men, but not in earlier days! There was general agreement, however, that it was the “flying” iniet who represented the pinnacle of iniet power, and although tena iniet could also use the shape of other birds, the minigulai played a special role. Moreover, it was only To B. who painted these “flying” tena iniet as a kind of traditional airforce, out to destroy “the enemy” indiscriminately. 6 All other informants saw it as the function of these tena iniet to “finish off’ people who had been poisoned by other forms of magic, attracted by the special smell such people exuded. Iniet minigulai did not kill people because the tena iniet wanted to avenge himself or because he had been hired as an assassin, but because they had to respond to this smell which poisoned the “atmosphere” and had to be removed. 7 That much was clear, but the situation was more complex because tena iniet were rarely just tena iniet but usually also tena agagar or tena varong etc. who could use their other skills to “poison” people magically before “finishing them off’ as tena iniet, and the whole finishing off interpretation did, of course, not apply to tena iniet going out as vavina tabatabaran. Still, here too tena iniet were instruments of order - in this case, in western terms, guardians of the sanctity of marriage. Yet it was “the iniet’ as a power, rather than the tena iniet as a person, which performed this function, although this is not the way a Tolai would put it. How Tolai see the situation became clearer when I asked To R. to explain how the killing of the tena ram by his father’s iniet shark (see above) fitted into the picture. Yes, his father had killed the man to avenge the death of his sister, but he had not used his iniet powers to do so. He had first “poisoned” the man, using his powers as a tena agagar before finishing him off with his iniet shark. He had chosen to complete the matter the iniet way but he did not have to. He could also have killed the man with his agagar powers alone, by completing the agagar ritual, that is to say by making a fire on the spot where he had buried the bamboo container with his victim’s puta (= soul substance) and feeding it until the container burst from the heat, thereby killing the man. Why his father had chosen the iniet way To R. did not know, but he knew how his father had done it. He had sent out his spirit to the beach to call for a spirit shark - not an ordinary animal. The spirit shark had then cruised through the water with his father’s 6 Even in his case, the “military” interpretation gradually collapsed, since his iniet minigulai behaved like unguided missiles, incapable of distinguishing between friend and foe, who would eventually have killed everybody - unless there was some “selective” principle at work. On the other hand, some informants described the smell as most appetizing to tena iniet - like that of a ripe banana (of which Tolai are so fond that they grow dozens of different varieties). 7
