East Flores Revisited: a Note on Asymmetric Alliance in Leloba and Wailolong, Indonesia By Penelope Graham The purpose of this note is to publish some additional data on asym metric alliance in the Ili Mandiri area of the island of Flores eastern Indonesia, and to supplement the analysis put forward by R. H. Barnes in his article entitled ‘Alliance and categories in Wailolong, East Flores’ 1 in Sociologus 27/2 (1977). When Barnes visited certain villages in the Ili Mandiri area of east Flores in 1970, he was intent on supplementing the ethnographic record of the region as it existed in the unpublished field notes of the American anthropologist Raymond Kennedy (1955), as well as in the published works of Vatter (1932), Arndt (1937, 1938, 1940, 1951) and Ouwehand (1950). He paid particular attention to the village of Wailolong, because Kennedy’s notes (1955: 407 - 8) included data on actual marriages in that village, with reference to which conformity to alliance rules and ideo logy could be measured. In Wailolong, Barnes collected a relationship terminology characterised by asymmetric prescription and a set of rules for contracting unilateral marriage alliances. In his article in Sociologus, he presents this data and analyses, in relation to it, the marriages re corded by Kennedy twenty years earlier. In reviewing the literature on east Flores 1 2 , I realised that Barnes evidently had not had access to the full text of Kennedy’s notes, when he was preparing his own article 3 .
