Baessler-Archiv, Neue Folge, Band XVI (1968) 55 pose the nature of the clay is peculiarly adapted” 8 . This seems to be the earliest account of the Shai pottery industry. It is evident that the Shai pottery in dustry was already well established and well-known at this date. In the 1850s, a missionary was writing of “big pottery villages in Shai, whose pots supply almost the whole Gold Coast” 8 9 . This is perhaps an exaggeration, even as regards what was then known as the Gold Coast, but they were certainly selling pots in the whole area reaching from Akwapim to the coast. Much of the palm oil from Akwapim and from Krobo reached the coast in Shai pots. The Krobo, producing something like 200,000 gallons a year, could not produce enough pots to carry it, and had to buy from the Shai 10 . Thousands of pots of oil were carried annually from the further Akwapim plantations as early as 1848 11 , probably entirely in Shai pots. There is archaeological evidence for the making of pottery in the Shai hills in the seventeenth century and probably earlier. Before the days of imported cooking pots, enamelled iron domestic ware, and glass and glazed pottery, every kind of domestic utensil was made of pottery; water was carried and stored in pots, food cooked and served in pots, pots were used as graters and strainers and for a thousand and one ritual and ceremonial purposes. The technique of Shai pottery a) raw materials The clay from which Shai pots are traditionally made, is dug from clay-pits on the banks of the river which is shown on the map as the Jawpa and its various tributaries. The clay-pits are under the control of priestesses, and the digging of clay is hedged about with ritual prohibitions. In particular, clay must be dug and carried by Shai women who have done their puberty rites. (See the section on special avoidances, below). It is usual for potters to dig their own clay, assisted sometimes by their daughters and grand-daughters. In Agomeda, which is some distance from the claypit, we were told that some of the older women pay other women to bring the clay; the price was 2/— per load (a load seems to represent about a week’s work for one potter). The clay is a very plastic one, and if not mixed with some other ingredient, it cracks. The traditional material is seyo or kloyo, ground-up gneiss from the 8 H.
