The shrine is ned Monte Carmine, situated on the slopes of s mall mountain chain along the Statale Appulo Lucana Road, in the territory of Avigliano, 21 km far from Potenza, the chief town of Basilicata. The main focus is on the yearly procession made by local and nonlocal devotees, on the 16th of July, when a statue of the Virgin is carried toward the shrine. This event, referred to an origin myth, is seen as crucial for the faith of the devotees as well as for the existence of the shrine itself. The purpose of the paper is to offer a valid contribution to the issue of pilgrimage in general, adding a further chapter to the literature concerning Marian shrines in particular. Pilgrimage It has been suggested, and correctly so, that pil grimage is a heterogeneous and complex phe nomenon, an “arena for competing religious and secular discourses” (Eade and Sallnow 1991: 2). The fundamental absence of uniformity particu larly emerges by considering certain geographical, historical, and cultural aspects which confer to each pilgrimage an unique character (Rabinow 1975; Sallnow 1981; van der Veer 1984; Werbner 1977). As Eade and Sallnow argue, anthropology, as a discipline founded upon the study of small-scale, non-Western societies, has been dealing with the pilgrimage issue overly stressing a functionalist bias. The notion that pilgrimage is essentially a great religious festival whose paramount function is to hold together members of a community or multitudes of diverse people, was, in fact, set forth by Durkheim in his classic text “The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life” in 1915. He saw ceremonies as social unifiers and moral regener ators having as main goal the preservation and welfare of societies. He also argued that rites are a means by which the social group reaffirms itself periodically. “Men who feel themselves united ... by a community of interest and tradition, assemble and become conscious of their moral unity” (1964:
