Friarbird on Timor Two Mambai Myths of Avian Rivalry David Hicks The present article is intended as a complementary rejoinder to “The Pigeon and the Friarbird,” an article published in Anthropos by Gregory Forth (1992) in which he presents an analysis of a set of eastern Indonesian myths in which two an tagonistic birds compete to determine the relative lengths of night and day. 1 In a footnote (433n) he comments that “where lengths are specified, both birds advocate a day and a night that are equally long. In other words, the combination of a long night and a short day or a short night and a long day are logical possibilities that are not presented in any of the stories.” Although delivered as an aside to a complex argument in which a number of theoretical insights are advanced and several issues of empirical sub stance are adduced in support of them, his remark, in effect, challenges Indonesianists to embark on a bibliographic quest within their region of eth nographic competence in search of any empirical manifestations of these theoretical options. As it happens, in a collection of narratives from Timor, published by Ezequiel Enes Pascoal (1967: 212), and containing two myths that feature the motif of avian confrontation, there is a narrative that substantiates the first possibility. One of the an tagonists favours a night that lasts one year be ing followed by a day of “normal” duration. The tale forms part of the oral tradition of the Mam- bai-speaking peoples of central Timor and was apparently collected in the region of Hatolia. Its companion text - also deriving from the Mambai ethnic population - develops the thematic possi bilities inherent in avian rivalry in a way untapped by the first tale and in the stories examined by Forth, but includes as common elements one of the species of bird appearing in the aforementioned texts and the fight between the protagonists arising from a dispute about time.
