The World of the Kxoe Bushmen A Review Article Mathias Guenther Students in the field of Khoisan studies have waited for a long time for “Die Welt der Kxoe- Buschleute.” The series is the life’s work of one of the leading Khoisan linguists and ethnographers, reporting the findings of over thirty years - 1957— 1988 - of fieldwork among the Kxoe, a remote and hitherto little-studied Bushman (San) group of around 1,500. Until the mid-1970s they had been living in south-eastern Angola in a region called Buma; the guerilla war against the Portugese had driven them into north-western Namibia, south of the Okavango river and at the northern border of the better-known Zhu /hoasi !Kung. Kohler’s first book (1989) in a series of twelve volumes is on the Kxoe people and their subdivisions and distribution, and on the neigh bouring San, Bantu-speaking and white neigh bours, and the patterns of contact with these settler groups over the past decades or centuries. The book also contains a detailed description and anal ysis of the language of the Kxoe. The subsequent volumes will be on the following topics, in or der of appearance; subsistence patterns; material culture; spatial organization; family and social or ganization; social control; magic and divination; religion; sickness and curing; music, dance and play; oral traditions; cosmology. Once completed this twelve-volume work on the world of the Kxoe Bushmen will stand as the most complete ethno graphic record to date on any Bushman group, exceeding even the rich and as yet not fully mined record on the /Xam of the Cape gathered by Wil helm Bleek and Lucy Lloyd a century earlier. Mo reover, because of its broad-spectrum ethnographic focus, this work on the Kxoe is also more com prehensive than the more narrowly focused record on the much-studied !Kung wherein such aspects of !Kung culture as ritual, myth, symbolism, and folklore have been somewhat short-shrifted be cause of the ecological bias of the majority of the ethnographers working on this San people. The Kxoe are a San group that should be of interest to any Bushman specialist because of features that rather strikingly distinguish it from the other groups. For instance cultivation and pas- toralism are significant elements of the foraging economy of the Kxoe San. The animals herded are either their own or they are owned by Bantu-speak ing Mbukush; oxen may be employed to carry game hunted a distance from camp and to plough bush gardens. Matrilineal clans are the basic unit of social organization, and sorcery or witchcraft seem to be well established mystical patterns. His torically, the Kxoe were raided by Mbwela slavers from the north-west, moreover, these San people themselves were active participants in the slave trade by selling their own children or captives. Yet, as Köhler tells us, the Kxoe are also a classic foraging society, an archaic, pristine “Naturvolk” that has, throughout its interaction with agro-pasto ral neighbours, been engaged in a “Kampf um die Erhaltung des Lebens als Jäger” (483). I will have more to say later about this intriguing, paradoxical portrayal of this group of Bushman hunter-gather ers. In its descriptive rather than analytic purport, and its attention to detail, Kohler’s monograph is classic ethnography, Boasian in bent. However, unlike Boas and like the afore-mentioned Wilhelm Bleek, Köhler has not set himself up as the ethno graphic authority reporting the facts. Instead, the role the author takes on is the more unassuming
