Such an approach is also the basis of the more recent affective turn in anthropology. In this debate, the concept of “affective scholarship” in particular, as “an epistemological neologism that helps to keep a sustained focus on affect as part of the repertoire of anthropological methods” (Stodulka, Selim and Mattes 2018:530), highlights affects as a central category of anthropological research. It is therefore a fruitful starting point to focus on moral and emotional challenges as well as dilemma situations within my research with Italian neo-fascists. In the next step, I will describe the nature of the fascist subculture as a political subculture in more detail. Its position on the borders of legality is largely responsible for the difficulties a researcher has in gaining access to the field and building relationships of trust with members that enable a complex understanding of the community beyond purely political content. Italian Neo-Fascism: Challenges of Access to a Political Subculture on the Borders of Legality Due to the legal restrictions in place since 1945, the Roman neo-fascist subculture is a very tight-knit community that is almost impenetrable to outsiders. Membership is not dependent on class or education, but mainly attained through family ties or political activism from an early age. As the capital of Italy, Rome has been the main arena for parliamentary and extra-parliamentary neo-fascist movements since 1945. Despite the restrictions on fascist organisations, there have always been neo-fascist movements in Italy since the war ended. The neo-fascist subculture, which is male-dominated, evolved from the generation of veterans who fought for the Repubblica Sociale Italiana (RSI) from 1943 to 1945. The RSI had been founded by Mussolini, backed by Nazi Germany, in the northern half of the country after the unconditional capitulation of the Italian government to the Allied forces in the south. Soldiers who fought for Mus- solini and former members of the fascist regime founded the first neo-fascist party – the Movimento Sociale Italiano – in 1946 and formed the basis of the neo-fascist subculture today. The construction of a (neo-)fascist identity is highly connected to experiences of war and violence, memories of which were passed down from one generation to the next within the political subculture. Losing the war left deep marks and shaped both the (fascist) veterans and the following generations. The anni di piombo, the ‘Years of Lead’ marked by strong political tensions and terror in Italy during the 1970s and 1980s5, brought further politically motivated violence.
