Piwowarczyk Abstract. - This sociohistorical missionary study concentrates on the practical ideology of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), particularly its “indigenist sector” - that is, the priests and brothers who have worked among the Guarani and the Ache of Paraguay since 1910 to the present. The author uses Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of fields to address the main theoretical problem of this study - namely, the identification and analysis of the historically situated economic, political, social, and cultural factors that account for the changes of the manner in which the SVD missionaries to Paraguayan Indians thought of and practiced their enterprise. Truth is in the doing (S0ren Kierkegaard) 1 Introduction fhis article concerns the practical ideology of the Society of the Divine Word, a Catholic mis sionary order founded in 1875, on the Dutch- merman border. The organization is also known u nder its German designation Steyler Missionare. particular, the study focuses on the labor of the Divine Word missionaries among the Guara- ni and the Ache Indians of Paraguay from 1910 to the present, and more precisely, on how their missionary ideology and practice reflected domi nant globalizing discourses during that period. I view this process as having passed through three major stages which can be named after the principal stated objectives of the SVD mission ary presence among the Indians as “conversion,” “human promotion,” and “ethno-development and interreligious dialogue.” These shifts in the mis sionary discourse of the SVD indigenist sector in Paraguay have been congruent with what I iden tify here as three discourses of Western moder nity applied to the “non-Western world,” which emerged from and shaped economic-political and social-cultural relations in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. These discourses or “doxas,” which I term “progress,” “development,” and “co- operation-participation,” have been adopted to lo cal contexts and shaped missionary habitus (the embodied history of their socialization in “frontier situations”). They were also refracted by, and man ifested in the discursive practice of the Paraguay an field of Indigenism, in which the missionaries “transcribed” the doxic principles implicit in their habitus into explicit institutional ideologies. The article, then, seeks to add Bourdieu’s concept of doxa, a product of a larger socioeconomic context, to the anthropological discussion on the tension between the ideology of missionary institutions and the praxis of work of their members in the field, and on the native response to missionary endeavors.
