These windows are not strictly trapezoidal in form and may generally be called rectangular, since the trapezoidal form is so slight. (Lintels may be of wood.) Although the stepped sides of gables and side walls in the Small Plaza Area struc tures cannot formally be described as windows it should be noted that these provided additional ventilation and light. In summary: Standard front wall windows, second-story gable windows and stepped side-wall openings are found to occur only in the closed type of structure. Standard windows in the valley-side walls may or may not occur in either type of structure. Ventilation was required more in the closed type of structures. No windows occur in the open type structures which provide access to the groups in the Small Plaza Area. Measurements indicate that standard windows are slightly larger when they are located in large structures. 6. Niches There is insufficient variation in the size of niches at Patallacta to make this a significant factor in distinguishing types here. However, there is such a difference between standard niches in the walls of structures and in the walls of the baths or fountains. a. Standard niches are trapezoidal in form. They are located at equal distances from each other in a wall except where they are replaced by windows. The number of niches in a structure, therefore, varies primarily with the size of the structure (i. e. length of wall available) and with the spacing of doorways and windows. They do not occur in upper stories of structures. They always occur in the lower story of a structure. Where a wall is constructed on a gradient (one instance occurs in the Upper Terraces where a rock is included) the niches may be horizontally stepped in the wall. The size of standard niches may vary slightly: Large Plaza Area measurements: 45—56 cm. base width. Small Plaza Area measurements: 41—46 cm. base width. Two-Plaza Group measurements: 43—51 cm. base width. Upper Terraces measurements: 35—50 cm. base width. b) Small niches (measurements: approx 20 cm. base width). These occur in the bath or fountain walls. They are trapezoidal in form. In summary: Niches are trapezoidal in form and are spaced equidistantly in a wall. The niches in large structures are usually bigger than those in smaller structures, but sizes overlap. The size of standard and small niches corresponds to the size of the structure in which they are located. This may also reflect function. 7. Walls All walls are slightly inwardly inclined. Terrace walls are, also, usually sloped for greater strength as retaining walls. In structures, only the wall thickness may vary:
