a ) Star-to-Star Constellations
a) Huchuy Cruz “Small Cross”. - The Southern Cross (Crux) as identified
ln the community of Sonqo. In Yucay, the Southern Cross was referred to
as Calvario”. The complete Spanish name for the Southern Cross is “El
Cruz Calvario”. It would seem from this that the local parlance in the two
communities makes use of different parts of the total Spanish concept (Fig. 1 h).
P) Hatun Cruz “Great Cross”. - The Great Cross is made up of the
following stars: Sirius (Fig. le), Procyon (Fig. 1/), Betelgeuse (Fig. Ig), and
Rigel (Fig. Id). This constellation was identified by an informant in the
community of Sonqo but several other Sonqo informants also mentioned it.
T) Chakdnuay “Bridge”. - The three stars of the Belt of Orion (Fig.
Ir)- The group was also referred to in Yucay by its more common name, “Las
Tres Marias”. The identification of Chakdnuay was obtained in Sonqo.
